James: Journal Entry 8/25/15

13 Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go into such and such a town and spend a year there and trade and make a profit”— 14 yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes. 15 Instead you ought to say, “If the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that.” 16 As it is, you boast in your arrogance. All such boasting is evil. 17 So whoever knows the right thing to do and fails to do it, for him it is sin.I’ve grown to enjoy the rigorous study that the book of James has provided. Today has been more from God to me. Historically, much controversy has surrounded this passage. Some scholars believe that James is attacking Paul in this passage. If you remember Paul likes to use the word “boast”. He even defends himself saying, “ Let the one who boast boast in Christ”(1 Corinthians 1:31)…. But as I think about Paul’s passage I wonder is Paul not saying the same thing as James just with different words. Paul says, Boast in Christ… James says, “ Say If the Lord wills”.

James 4:13-17

James, beyond the scholarly debate, reminds us that we are nothing more than a mist. He reminds us that the will of God will prevail with or without us. He reminds us that we aren’t as important we wish we were.

This teaching is harsh, but liberating. It frees me from worry, from doubt, and from always having to have a plan.

Father,

Thanks for being the boss. Thanks for my role in your will!
